Giusti - Giuseppe Giusti

Italian poet. Born into a wealthy family in Tuscany. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at the University of Pisa, he became a lawyer, but he also loved poetry and wrote many works satirizing politics and society. A poet belonging to the so-called early Risorgimento (Italian unification movement) and Romantic era, he participated in the First Italian War of Independence from 1848 to 1849 as a militia commander, and at the same time had close ties with A. Manzoni and others. Always conscious of C. Porta, who was famous for his satirical poetry in the Milanese dialect, he wrote his works making full use of the Tuscan dialect. His representative works include "Poems" (1844), "New Psalms" (1847), and "Tuscan Aphorisms" (1853, published posthumously).

イタリアの詩人。トスカナ地方の富裕な家庭に生まれる。ピサ大学法学部を卒業後、弁護士となるが、詩作を好み、政治や社会を風刺する作品を数多く残した。いわゆるリソルジメント（イタリア統一運動）前期とロマン主義の時代に属する詩人で、1848～49年の第一次イタリア独立戦争に民兵の指揮官として参加し、他方でA・マンゾーニらとの交流を重ねた。ミラノ方言による風刺詩で名高いC・ポルタをつねに意識して、トスカナ方言を縦横に駆使しながら作品を書き綴(つづ)っている。代表作は『詩集』（1844）、『新詩篇(しへん)』（1847）、『トスカナ格言集』（1853、没後刊）など。
