Carpeaux - Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux

Carpeaux - Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux

French sculptor. Born in Valenciennes. He went to Paris and studied first under F. Ludes and then F. J. Duret, where he acquired excellent technique. In 1854, he won the Prix de Rome for his work Hector Praying for the Protection of His Son, and went to Italy. It is said that he was deeply impressed by Michelangelo's masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. Among the works that Carpeaux submitted to the Academy in Rome, Ugolino and His Sons (1860, Louvre Museum) was inspired by Dante's Inferno, and gained great fame in Rome but was unpopular in Paris. However, after returning to France, he was fortunate to be under the patronage of Princess Mathilde, cousin of Emperor Napoleon III, and in this favorable environment he produced Flora (1863-66), a relief for the pavilion at the Tuileries, and The Dance (1869), in front of the Opera House. In 1872, he exhibited Four Parts of the World, which later became a fountain at the Luxembourg Museum, at the Salon, but he fell ill that same year and died three years later.
