This is one of the museums belonging to the Dresden State Art Collection in Germany. It was established as an art gallery in the palace to display the collection of the Electorate of Saxony, whose collection was catalogued in 1722. It was opened to the public as a national art gallery in 1831. In 1847, the palace was expanded with the Sempell Gallery, designed by G. Sempell. The Saxon family had been patrons of German Renaissance painters for generations, so in addition to those works, the museum added Italian Renaissance masterpieces purchased in bulk from Prague Castle, and paintings from France, Flanders, Spain, and the Netherlands that were later acquired, making it one of the leading art galleries in Europe. It continued to collect paintings until the 20th century, and has many modern paintings in its collection. In addition to Raphael's "Madonna and Child with San Sisto," Rembrandt's "The Painter and Saskia," and Cranach's "Henrich and Katharina of Saxony," the museum also has many masterpieces by Tintoretto, P. Veronese, F. Lippi, and Dürer. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
