...The origins of such national policy review and legislative activities as a means of confirming the loyalty of the people and strengthening national unity date back to the founding of the country, but more recently, after both world wars, they have been actively carried out in relation to the political activities of anarchists, socialists, and communists. The most famous of these is the House Committee on Un-American Activities (abbreviated as HUAC, commonly known as the Soybean Committee), which was established as a special committee in the House of Representatives in 1938. HUAC was originally established with the aim of suppressing subversive activities by domestic Nazi sympathizers, but it soon shifted its main target to communists, and after it was promoted to a standing committee in the Congress in 1945 when the Republicans held the majority, it became a stronghold for the ``Red Scare'' by right-wing members of Congress such as RM Nixon. ...
