Karlskrona (English spelling)

Japanese: カールスクルーナ（英語表記）Karlskrona

Located in the eastern corner of southern Sweden, it is Sweden's main naval port and the capital of Blekinge County. It also has an air force base. Population: 59,000 (1990). Founded in 1679 by King Charles XI. The naval port makes use of five islands in the south and the winding coastline, and has a fortress, a large dock carved into granite, a shipyard, metalworking, brewing and lumber factories. These manufacture supplies and clothing for the navy, and also export granite stone. There is also a 17th century church and an 18th century town hall. [Asai Tatsuro]

スウェーデン南部東隅にある同国の主要軍港，ブレキンゲ県の県都。空軍基地もある。人口5万9000(1990)。1679年にカール11世により創建。軍港は南の5島と屈曲の多い海岸を利用し，要塞や花コウ岩をくりぬいた広いドック，造船所，金工･醸造･製材工場もある。これらは海軍用物資や衣類をつくり，花コウ岩の石材をも移出する。17世紀の教会，18世紀の市庁舎もある。【浅井辰郎】
