Located in the eastern corner of southern Sweden, it is Sweden's main naval port and the capital of Blekinge County. It also has an air force base. Population: 59,000 (1990). Founded in 1679 by King Charles XI. The naval port makes use of five islands in the south and the winding coastline, and has a fortress, a large dock carved into granite, a shipyard, metalworking, brewing and lumber factories. These manufacture supplies and clothing for the navy, and also export granite stone. There is also a 17th century church and an 18th century town hall.
