A poet representing the Spanish Renaissance. Born into a noble family in Toledo, he quickly made a name for himself at the court of Charles V as an ideal courtier who excelled in both the literary and military arts, and he devoted most of his life to the wars under the emperor. In 1525, he married Elena de Zuniga, a lady of the court, for political reasons, but the following year he met the Portuguese Isabel Freire, and made their unrequited love the main theme of his poetry. In 1532, he was banished from court and faced imprisonment due to a dispute with his master, Charles V, but with the intercession of his friends, he was able to settle in Naples, where his artistic talent blossomed.

Garcilaso de la Vega

1539‐1616
Peruvian chronicler. Born in Cusco as the son of a conquistador (conqueror) from the family of the poet of the same name and an Inca princess. His True Record of the Origin of the Incas (or His Imperial Rule, 1609-17), which tells of the glory of the Inca Empire, is considered a pioneering work of indigenismo literature. Although he traveled to Spain in 1560 and remained there until his death, he maintained a strong admiration for the Inca civilization and wrote a historical account of it in comparison with European society and culture.

スペイン･ルネサンス期を代表する詩人。トレドの名門貴族に生まれ，文武両道に秀でた理想的な宮廷人として，早くからカルロス5世の宮廷で名をはせ，その生涯のほとんどを皇帝のもとでの戦争に捧げた。1525年に宮廷の貴婦人エレナ･デ･スニガと政略的な結婚をしたが，翌年ポルトガル人のイサベル･フレイレと出会い，その報われぬ恋を詩の主たるテーマにした。32年に主君カルロス5世とのいざこざのため宮廷から追放され入獄のうきめにあったが，友人たちのとりなしによりナポリに落ち着き，そこで彼の芸術が開花することになった。

ガルシラソ･デ･ラ･ベガ【El Inca Garcilaso de la Vega】

1539‐1616
ペルーの年代記作者。同名の詩人の家系のコンキスタドール(征服者)とインカの王女との混血児として，クスコで生まれた。インカ帝国の栄光を伝えた《インカの起源にかんする真実の記録》(または《インカ皇統記》，1609‐17)は，インディヘニスモ文学の先駆的作品に位置づけられている。1560年にスペインへ渡り，死ぬまでそこにとどまったものの，インカ文明に対する強いあこがれを保持し，インカ文明をヨーロッパ社会と文化との対比において歴史的に叙述したものである。
