A geological formation consisting mainly of continental deposits from the late Paleozoic to early Mesozoic eras in the inland areas of South Africa, distributed over a wide area of Africa south of the equator and the island of Madagascar, known as the Great Karoo Basin. It is divided into four layers, characterized by an early glacial period (the Dwykian glacial period) and an end by a period of volcanic activity. The sedimentary rocks in between are mainly muddy and sandy rocks with gravel intercalations. The Dwykian glacial period began in the Devonian period and reached its peak in the Permian to Carboniferous periods. Glaciers and clastic material were transported from the four highlands around the periphery of the Great Karoo Basin. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
