... A . negishii Makino, which is distributed in the Izu Islands, is also closely related to A. urashimasou, and its corms are steamed and crushed into balls for eating. In addition, many other species have evolved in Japan, including those thought to be a primitive group consisting of three leaflets, such as A. ringens (Thunb.) Schott (illustration) and A. ternatipartitum Makino (illustration); the A. nikoense Nakai group, which has five leaflets but usually two leaves and whose main habitat is beech forests in cool temperate regions; A. robustum (Engl.) Nakai (illustration), which has a single leaf and is distributed from the heavy snow areas along the Sea of Japan coast to the continent; and regional endemic species such as A. maximowiczii (Engl.) Nakai, A. iyoanum Makino, and A. seppikoense Kitamura, which have special single leaves. More than 150 species of Arisaema are known from East Africa, East Asia, Malaysia, and the east coast of North America, with the most diverse species found in the mountainous regions from the eastern Himalayas to southern China.
