Picture of the Appearance of the Golden Coffin of Shaka
A variation of the Life of Buddha. Based on the Maha Maya Sutra, this painting depicts the miracle of Shakyamuni descending from Trayastri Heaven after entering Nirvana, rising from his golden coffin to explain the cause of life and death to his grieving mother, Maya. It is also called Shakyamuni's Rebirth Preaching. Examples can be seen in the murals of the Mogao Caves (Thousand Buddha Caves) in Dunhuang, China, and in Japan the most famous is the National Treasure of Kyoto National Museum, "Colored Silk Painting of Shakyamuni Emergeing from His Golden Coffin." It is a work depicting a dramatic scene with skillful composition and effective color arrangement, and the light, dynamic lines seen in some parts suggest that it was created in the late Heian period.
