He was originally called Yorishige, but changed his name to Yoritoki to avoid sharing the same name as Mutsu no Kami Minamoto no Yoriyoshi. Since his ancestors, Yoritoki has been in a position to lead the Emishi as the governor of the Oku Rokugun (the governor of six counties in central Iwate Prefecture: Isawa, Esashi, Waga, Hienuki, Shiwa, and Iwate).
