Born: February 5, 1788 Tet [Died] November 21, 1830. Hungarian playwright and novelist. Born into an aristocratic family, he joined the military at his father's request, but left the army to become a painter, and was disowned, leading to a wandering around Europe. After returning to Hungary in 1817, he became a successful playwright. His historical drama A Tatárok Magyarországon (The Hungarian Tatars) (performed in 1811, published in 1819) was well received in the nationalistic climate of the time. His social satire comedies A kérök (The Suitors) (17) and Csalódások (Disappointment) (28) criticized the anachronistic lifestyle of the aristocracy. He was the editor of the literary yearbook Aurora from 1821 (the first issue was published in 1822), and played a major role in promoting Romantic literature.
