... In terms of film history, gangster films are divided into those about criminal organizations (syndicates) and those about group robberies (the big caper). The former can be seen in the "mafia films" from Russell Rouse's "The Secret Society of New York" (1955) to Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather" (1971), while the latter can be seen in the "heist films" from John Huston's "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950) and Jules Dassin's "The Battle of the Five Armies" (1955) to Mike Hodges' "The Sniper" (1971) and Peter Yates' "The Hot Rock" (1971).
[Japanese gangster movies]
According to Yamamoto Kikuo's "The Influence of Foreign Films on Japanese Film," gangster films first appeared in Japanese film history around 1932-33, with films such as "Hero of the Underworld," "Recreating Capone," "Woman on the Cordon," "Woman on the Cordon," "Boss of the Skyscraper," and "Gangster Slaying" being made one after another, but as is clear from the titles, all of these were created as a result of the influence and imitation of films such as "Underworld" and "Cordon" by director Sternberg and "Boss of the Underworld" by director Howard Hawks, and ever since then, Japanese gangster films have continued to bear the fate of being "stateless action" films.

　日本映画史にギャング映画が現れるのは，山本喜久男《日本映画における外国映画の影響》によれば，1932‐33年ころからで，《暗黒街の英雄》《カポネ再現》《非常線の女》《警戒線の女》《摩天楼の顔役》《ギャング討伐》といった作品が次々につくられたが，いずれも題名からして明らかなように，スタンバーグ監督《暗黒街》《非常線》，ハワード･ホークス監督《暗黒街の顔役》などの影響と模倣によって生まれたものであり，以来，日本のギャング映画は〈無国籍アクション〉映画としての宿命を背負い続けていくことになる。…
