…Until the second half of the 17th century, the Ashanti people were divided into a group of weak states that paid tribute to the more powerful states of Doma in the west and Denkyira in the south. At the end of the 17th century, Osei Tutu became king of one of these weak states, Kumasi (located near the present-day city of Kumasi).
