Kayakuguri (Japanese accentor)

Japanese: カヤクグリ(茅潜過) - カヤクグリ（英語表記）Japanese accentor

A bird of the family Larkidae in the order Passeriformes (illustration). Total length is about 14 cm. It is generally a dark brown with a grayish tinge, with a reddish brown back and black vertical stripes. It is a bird with a uniform coloring and no particularly outstanding features. From spring to summer, it inhabits the upper subalpine zone to the alpine zone in central and northern Honshu. It lives in forests of Japanese hemlock and mariesii, and in shrubs of Japanese stone pine and rowan, but as its name suggests, it is always hiding in the brush and is difficult to see. When singing, it perches on a high, protruding branch and sings in a beautiful, fast-paced voice: chururi, chururi, chirichirichirichir.

スズメ目イワヒバリ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約14cm。全体に灰色みを帯びた黒褐色で，背は赤褐色に黒い縦斑がある。とくに目だった特徴のないじみな色彩の鳥。春から夏の間は，本州中部以北の亜高山帯上部から高山帯に生息する。コメツガやオオシラビソの森林やハイマツ，ウラジロナナカマドなどの低木林の中にいるが，その名のようにいつもやぶの中を潜行していて，なかなか姿を見せない。さえずるときは高く突き出た枝に止まり，美しい声でチュルリ，チュルリ，チリチリチリチリと早口に鳴く。
