Born on September 5, 1828. After working as a historiographer at the Imperial University, a professor at the Army Cadet School, and a professor at Gakushuin, he became a professor at Tokyo Imperial University in 1924. His "History of Japanese Sinology Literature," published posthumously in 1929, was the result of the earliest research into the history of Sinology literature in Japan. He passed away on July 28, 1927, at the age of 64. He was from Etchu (Toyama Prefecture). He graduated from Imperial University. His nickname was Kinkaku, and his pen name was Kensai.
