Yahgan (English spelling)

Japanese: ヤーガン - やーがん（英語表記）Yahgan

They were hunter-gatherers who lived on Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost island of South America. They called themselves Yamoma. They were also called Canoe Indians because they used bark canoes to travel on the sea. Despite the extreme cold, they lived in simple semi-underground huts and were almost naked except for animal skins. To hunt land animals, they used javelins with stone arrowheads, bolas (slings made of several stones attached to a string), and traps. However, the Yaghan lived mainly on the coast and relied heavily on seafood.

南アメリカ大陸の最南端に位置するフエゴ島に居住していた採集狩猟民。自称はヤモマ。樹皮製のカヌーをあやつり，海上を移動することからカヌー･インディアンと呼ぶこともある。酷寒の地にもかかわらず，粗末な半地下式の小屋に住み，獣皮をまとう以外はほとんど裸同然で暮らしていた。陸上動物の狩猟には石製矢じりをつけた投げ槍，数個の石をひもで結んだ投石具のボーラやわなを用いた。だがヤーガンは海浜に主として住み，海産物への依存が高かった。
