Originally, thin raw silk was used for the warp threads, and thick raw silk or worsted yarn was used for the weft threads, which were pulled together and woven several at a time to create thick ridges in the direction of twist, but later cotton and synthetic fibers were also used. These horizontal ridges are characterized by being high and rounded, and the fabric has a horizontal tension. Generally, the finish is stiff and the texture is rough. Taking advantage of these properties, it is used for women's coats, clothing fabrics, trims, ribbons, etc.

もとは経糸(たていと)に細い生糸を使い、緯糸(よこいと)に太い生糸、または梳毛糸(そもうし)を一度に数本ずつ引きそろえにして打ち込み、撚(よ)り方向に太い畝(うね)を出した織物であったが、のちに木綿や化合繊を使ったものもできた。この横の畝は、高くて丸みがあるのが特徴で、横張りのある生地である。一般に仕上げは堅くて手ざわりはこわい。この性質を利用して、婦人用コート、服地、縁飾り、リボンなどに使われる。
