Years of birth: unknown. The first Japanese Christian. Born in Satsuma Province (Kagoshima Prefecture). After committing murder, he fled to Southeast Asia. In 1547, he met Xavier in Malacca, and at Xavier's urging, he studied at St. Paul's College in Goa and was baptized. His baptismal name was Paulo de Santa Fe (Paul of the Holy Faith). He provided Xavier with information about Japan and had a great influence on missionary work in Japan. In August 1549 (Tenbun 18), he returned to Kagoshima with Xavier. In Goa and Kagoshima, he translated Christian doctrine books into Japanese for Xavier. According to hearsay, he was killed in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China in his later years.
