German conductor. Born in Babenhausen, Bavaria, he studied music in Augsburg and Munich. He made his debut as a concert conductor in 1926, conducting the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. He subsequently served as conductor and music director at the Mannheim Opera, Berlin Opera, Hamburg State Opera, and other venues. In 1949, he was instrumental in the founding of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, serving as its chief conductor until 1961, and helped to develop the orchestra into one of Germany's most prestigious orchestras. He was the principal conductor of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1961 to 1964, and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra from 1971 to 1979, and also guest conductor at orchestras and opera houses throughout Europe.
