French painter Jules Chéret (1836-1932) is considered the father of the modern poster. He demonstrated dazzling color effects and demonstrated that the poster was a medium in which artistic experimentation could be undertaken.

...Only Fantin-Latour achieved a popular success. What broke the stagnation of lithography was the large-scale color poster prints by Jules Chéret (1836-1931) in the late 1980s. The first color lithography was chromolithography, developed in 1836 by Godefroi Engelmann (1788-1839), but this technique involved overprinting the three primary colors, which tended to produce muddy colors, and was used primarily by artisans to reproduce paintings.
