Female Goddess of Thunder - Onna Narukami

Japanese: 女鳴神 - おんななるかみ

Kabuki kyogen. One act. Historical piece. Original title: Neko no Koneko. First performed at the Edo Nakamuraza in November 1696 (Genroku 9). Performed by Ogino Sawanojo. This is a rewrite of Narukami, with the story of Narukami-ni being seduced by the beauty of Kumo no Zemannosuke and breaking her morals and becoming corrupt. Since then, famous female actors have performed it with different titles and themes, but the current script is Zoho Onna Narukami (Enlarged Female Narukami) (1891 Kabukiza), which was written by Kawatake Shinshichi III and revised by Fukuchi Ochi. 歌舞伎狂言。1幕。時代物。本名題《子子子子子（ねこのこねこ）》。1696年(元禄9)11月江戸中村座初演。荻野沢之丞所演。《鳴神》を女に書き替えたもので，鳴神尼が雲の絶間之助の容色に迷い破戒堕落するという筋。以来著名な女方が名題と趣向をかえて上演しているが，現行の台本は3世河竹新七の作に福地桜痴が加筆した《増補女鳴神（ぞうほおんななるかみ）》(1891年歌舞伎座)が行われている。【菊池明】
