Based on the Tang Dynasty's Yuan Zhen's fantastic novel, “The Legend of the Yingying,” the play depicts the love affair between the clerk Zhang Gong and Cui Yingying, but the plot has been altered so that the love between the two ends in disaster in “The Legend of the Yingying.” It had a major influence on Wang Shifu's “Records of the Western War,” a masterpiece of the later Yuan Dynasty drama genre, Zaju. …
