A Jomon period shell mound located in Ataka, Jonan Town, Shimomashiki County, Kumamoto Prefecture. One of a group of shell mounds in the southern Kumamoto Plain, it is located at the edge of a plateau extending from Mt. Kihara and faces the Hamado River, a tributary of the Midorikawa River. It was discovered and investigated in 1916, and many human bones were found. In 1977, an investigation was carried out to confirm the shell layer and the extent of the ruins, and part of what appears to be the site of a square pit dwelling with rounded corners was discovered. The shell mound is mainly composed of oysters, followed by Yamato corbicula. It is an inland bay shell mound with other prominent species such as agemaki clams and hard clams, in contrast to the Goryo shell mound located about 300m to the east, which is mainly composed of Yamato corbicula (over 90%).
