Strait of Ere - Erekaikyo

Japanese: エーレ海峡 - えーれかいきょう
Strait of Ere - Erekaikyo

...a strait between the Jutland Peninsula and Sweden. It is the eastern waters of the strait that connects the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, and is connected to the Baltic Sea by the Skagerrak Strait in the west and three straits in the east. It is 60 to 150 km wide. The southern half of the strait has a gravel bottom of moraine origin, about 20 meters deep, but the northeastern Swedish side is more than 80 meters deep and has a submarine valley. The Öre Strait, the main waterway to the Baltic Sea, had a maritime customs office in the Middle Ages and was a major source of revenue for the Danish kings. It is still the only trade route connecting the Baltic Sea to the open sea.
