The war between Iran and Iraq began with a large-scale cross-border attack by Iraq on September 22, 1980, and continued for about eight years until a ceasefire came into effect on August 20, 1988. The roots of the hostility that developed into armed conflict lie in a dispute that began in the 1960s over the ownership of the Shatt al-Arab River that runs between the two countries. In addition to the issue of ownership of the Shatt al-Arab River, which was the main cause of the war, the existence of mutual interference with ethnic and religious minorities in both countries can be pointed out as a background to the tension.
