[The Essence of Labor Unions]
A trade union is an organization in which wage laborers unite to act collectively with the goal of maintaining and improving their living conditions and status as workers. British S. Webb defined it as "a continuing association of wage laborers for the purpose of maintaining and improving their living conditions" (History of Trade Unionism, 1920), and this has been considered the classical definition. However, in the course of development up to the present day, the scope of trade union activities has expanded to include political issues and issues of expanding workers' voices in corporate management and work processes, so this definition has been criticized as not being able to fully express the activities of trade unions today.
