Rainier
Regnier, Mathurin

Born: December 21, 1573, Chartres
[Died] October 22, 1613. Rouen. French satirical poet. Nephew of P. Desportes. His life is shrouded in many legendary anecdotes and many parts are unclear. He was a libertine poet, somewhere between Billon and Verlaine, with a free and unrestrained style. He opposed Malherbe's poetic theory and argued that poetry should follow the free ideas of each individual without being bound by rules. He left behind 16 satirical poems that were the forerunners of Boileau, making use of the ancient satirical form that the Pleiade poets had been unable to revive, and he captured the figures of hypocrites and pedants with his sharp observational eye. Boileau described him as "the French poet who was most familiar with the customs and character of men before Molière." He had a great influence on Romantic poets such as Musset. He has a collection of works, Œuvres (1608, 13 enlarged).
