The name of a giant bird that appears in Hindu mythology. It is the chief of the bird tribe and the enemy of the snake tribe (→ Naga). According to legend, Garuda resented the humiliation of his mother by the snake tribe, and since then he has eaten snakes. It is the vehicle of the god Vishnu. It was also adopted in Buddhism, where it is transliterated as Garuda (Karura) and translated into Chinese as Konjicho (Gold-winged Bird), and is considered one of the eight guardians of Buddhism.
