...Even in cases where the birth room was under one roof, such as a geya or nand, it was customary to keep the fire for cooking for the new mother separate from the fire for the family in the main house. The first three days of the birth mourning period were particularly severe, and were called Mikkaoboya (Niigata Prefecture) or Arazumikka (Miyagi Prefecture), while the eight days were called Arabi (Fukuoka Prefecture), and the two weeks were called Arayumi (Toyama Prefecture), indicating that these periods were considered the most severe. There were also cases where the birth mourning period extended not only to the family but to the entire village....
