A general term for perennial plants of the Gossypium genus of the Malvaceae family that become woody, but many are treated as annuals in cultivation. They are widely cultivated as fiber crops and are also used for oil. Cotton refers to the seed cotton of cotton seeds or the fiber produced from them. The roots are deep taproots that reach underground. The stems are single and have lateral branches, and can grow to a height of 1 to 1.5 meters, although some species can grow even taller. The leaves are usually palmate with 3 to 5 lobes, and alternate on the stems with long petioles. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
