Born: June 28, 1824 in Saint-Foy-la-Grand
Died July 9, 1880. Paris. French surgeon and physical anthropologist. Founded the Society of Anthropology of Paris in 1859, and became a member of the Academie de Medicine in Paris in 1866. Founded the Ecole d'Anthropologie (School of Anthropology) in 1876 and became its director. In addition to devising measuring instruments for the human body and human bones and working to standardize measuring methods, in 1861 he discovered that the center controlling language was located in the left frontal region. He was also known for his research on comparative anatomy and brain morphology.
