A peninsula in northwest Fukuoka Prefecture that cuts off the Genkai Sea and Hakata Bay, forming a natural breakwater. It is part of Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City. It is about 12 kilometers long and 0.5 to 2 kilometers wide. It is a sandbar that connects low Paleogene hills, and its tip is a "michikire" (mangiri), which is connected to Shikanoshima Island by a bridge. At Mukaihama in the south, sand spits have developed at Saitozaki and Gannosu. A land route leads from Gannosu to Kashiihama Beach via Umi no Nakamichi Bridge and the reclaimed land "Island City". It is a scenic spot of white sand and green pines made of black pines planted in the Edo period, and together with Shikanoshima Island, it forms part of the Genkai Quasi-National Park. The island is used as a recreational spot for swimming and hiking, including the national Umi-no-Nakamichi Seaside Park, which opened in 1981. Nata, at the base of the island, was a semi-agricultural, semi-fishing village, but in recent years it has been developed into a residential area. There used to be a coal mine at Saitozaki. The JR Kashii Line runs to Saitozaki. [Masaaki Ishiguro] [Reference] | Umi-no |Photographed from the north.
