Uvala - Uvala (English spelling) uvala

A concave topography found in limestone regions, larger than a doline but smaller than a polje. Its planar shape is an elongated oval, and its typical length is about 1 kilometer. The depression is surrounded by steep cliffs, and its bottom is wide and not necessarily flat. Its origins include a doline developing and joining adjacent dolines, a collapse caused by the collapse of the hanging wall of an underground limestone cave, or the joining of both.

石灰岩地域にみられる凹(おう)地形で、ドリーネより大きく、ポリエより小さいものをいう。その平面形は細長い楕円(だえん)形をしており、長さは1キロメートルぐらいが標準的である。凹地の周囲は急崖(きゅうがい)をなしており、底は幅広く、かならずしも平坦(へいたん)ではない。成因は、ドリーネが発達して隣接のドリーネを結合する場合、地下の鍾乳洞(しょうにゅうどう)の上盤の落下による陥没の場合、両者の結合によるものなどである。
