...The king was declared incompetent on June 10th and was transferred to a villa on the shores of Lake Starnberg and confined there, but then on Sunday the 13th, at around 4:30pm, he went out for a walk with Guden and did not return, and that night the two were finally found drowned. This incident captured the attention of Mori Ogai, who happened to be in Munich at the time, and was later depicted in his novel Utakata no Ki (1890). There have been many other literary works on the subject of the king, mainly in Europe, and in 1972 it was made into a film directed by Luchino Visconti, which was well received. There are various theories about the king's illness, such as paranoia, schizophrenia, and abnormal personality, but since his brother Otto, who was three years younger than him, is thought to have had schizophrenia, it is highly likely that he had a similar illness. ...
