Bloch, F.

…Recent high-resolution mass analyzers have sensitivities on the order of ppm in atomic mass units, and are used as one of the methods for elemental analysis. Nuclear magnetic resonance was originally invented independently by Felix Bloch (1905-82) and Edwards Miles Purcell (1912-97) as a means of measuring the magnetic moment of nuclei. However, since it was discovered that the resonance frequency depends not only on the type of nucleus but also on its chemical environment (chemical shift), nuclear magnetic resonance has been eagerly developed by chemists. …

[Nuclear Magnetic Resonance]

[Early history]
W. Pauli was the first to point out the possibility that certain nuclei could act as magnets (1924). The first to observe the NMR phenomenon were two American physicists, F. Bloch and E.M. Purcell (1945). At the time, NMR was considered a method for precise measurement of the magnetic moment of atomic nuclei.
