German author. Born in Kiel. Served in World War I, he was seriously wounded in 1915 and taken prisoner by the Russian army. He was interned in Siberia, but managed to escape. He joined the White Army (counter-revolutionary forces) and fought there before returning to Germany in 1921. His trilogy of German sufferings, which describes his experiences -- Army Behind Barbed Wire (subtitled Siberian Diary, 1929), Between White and Red (1930), and We Call Germany (1932) -- makes him one of the most representative Nazi writers.
