Usunoki - Usunoki

A deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). It grows to a height of about 1 meter, with green young branches. The leaves are alternate, oblong-ovate, 2-4 cm long, pointed at the tip, and have fine sawtooth edges. From April to May, 1-3 bell-shaped white flowers with a reddish brown tinge bloom downward at the tips of the previous year's branches. The corolla is about 5 mm long, has five shallow lobes at the tip, and curves back, with 10 stamens. The fruit is obovate, about 1 cm long, with five shallow ridges, a concave tip, and five sepals remaining around it. It ripens red and can be eaten from August to September. It is distributed in the mountainous areas of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The name comes from the fact that the tip of the fruit is concave and mortar-shaped, and because the fruit is angular, it is also called kakuminosunoki (horn-fruited vinegar tree).

ツツジ科（APG分類：ツツジ科）の落葉低木。高さ1メートル内外で若枝は緑色。葉は互生し、長楕円(ちょうだえん)状卵形、長さ2～4センチメートルで先はとがり、縁(へり)に細鋸歯(さいきょし)がある。4～5月、前年の枝の先に白色ですこし赤褐色を帯びた鐘形の花が1～3個下向きに開く。花冠は長さ約5ミリメートルで、先が浅く5裂して反り返り、雄しべは10本ある。果実は倒卵形、長さ約1センチメートルで浅い5稜(りょう)があり、先はへこみ、周りに5枚の萼片(がくへん)が残っている。8～9月に赤く熟して食べられる。北海道、本州、四国、九州の山地に分布する。名は、果実の先がへこみ臼(うす)形になるためで、果実が角張るのでカクミノスノキ（角実の酢の木）ともよばれる。
