An earthquake occurred in the Fukui Plain at around 16:13 on June 28, 1948 (Showa 23). It was 7.3 on the Richter scale, with a very shallow epicenter at a depth of 0 km, 3,892 deaths, 35,420 houses completely destroyed, and 11,816 houses partially destroyed. Many areas in the central Fukui Plain had a 100% complete destruction rate, and the experience of this earthquake led to the creation of the Japan Meteorological Agency's seismic intensity scale of VII. The shaking was so intense that houses collapsed within 5 to 15 seconds. Fires broke out in various areas, destroying 3,851 houses. No visible faults were found, but precise surveys revealed a 25 km long fault (the east side is uplifted about 70 cm from the west side) running north-northwest to south-southeast on the eastern edge of the Fukui Plain.
