Do as you please - Do as you please (English) Au Bout de Souffle

Do as you please - Do as you please (English) Au Bout de Souffle

French film. 1959 production. Jean-Luc Godard's feature debut, following Claude Chabrol's "Les Cousins" and François Truffaut's "The 400 Years Don't Understand," both made in the same year, this monumental work established the name of the Nouvelle Vague in the public's mind and has become a symbol of the genre. The original title means "out of breath." While stealing a car and killing a policeman along the way and continuing his escape, Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) clings to his female friend Patricia (Jean Seberg, 1938-1979) and loses track of time in their conversation. However, they are unable to communicate with each other. The film is sprinkled with memorable elements that at first glance seem unprofessional, such as jump cuts, which were created by carefully removing parts of scenes that had already been edited, and the deliberate incorporation of references to other films into the drama, and yet it beautifully portrays the ever-changing state of human consciousness and the texture of an existential reality ruled by chance and absurdity.
