Internship - internship (English spelling)

Internship - internship (English spelling)

A student undergoes work experience at a company or government office for a certain period of time. The aim is to use the experience gained from working in a real job to help them choose their major and future career. The content of internships varies widely, from workplace visits to work experience and planning. Teaching practice and medical practice are usually not included in internships. According to a survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 86% of universities, junior colleges and technical colleges conducted internships in 2017 (Heisei 29), and the number of students who participated exceeded 780,000. Internships are mainly aimed at university students, junior college students and technical college students, but they are also spreading to high school students. The duration of the internship is usually one week to one month during the summer vacation, but some can last more than six months. There are both paid and unpaid internships, and more than 80% of universities that offer internships recognize internship participation as credits.

This system began in American universities in the early 20th century, and was an attempt to see how the academic subjects one majored in were applied in society at work and to apply them to their studies. However, in recent years, more and more students are using internships simply to earn credits or to gain an advantage in finding a job. The Japan Business Federation (Keidanren)'s recruitment selection guidelines state that internships should be "carried out with a clear statement that they have no relation whatsoever to recruitment selection activities." However, more and more companies are using internships to make contact with students as early as possible before the recruitment ban is lifted, and to so-called "buying up" talented people. As Keidanren will abolish its recruitment selection guidelines for students joining the company in the spring of 2021, more companies are expected to use internships as part of their recruitment activities, and the government is calling on the business community to ban internships that are directly linked to recruitment.
