Yoshiro Irino

Composer. Born in Vladivostok. Graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo in 1943 (Showa 18). Apart from studying under Moroi Saburo for a year and a half during his university years, he was mostly self-taught in composition. He became interested in twelve-tone music around 1950 (Showa 25), and in 1951 released Japan's first work using twelve-tone technique, "Chamber Concerto for Seven Instruments". He continued to write works using the tone series technique after that, while also working to introduce the theory and works. In his later years, he became interested in Japanese and Asian music, and released works based on the ideas of "world music" and "pan-music". His books include "Music of twelve tones" (1953), and his major works include "Double Concerto for Violin and Piano" (1955), "Aya no Tsuzumi" (1962), "Wandlungen" for orchestra (1973), "Hyodan" (1977), and others.

作曲家。ウラジオストク生まれ。1943年（昭和18）東京大学経済学部卒業。大学時代に1年半諸井(もろい)三郎に師事したほかは、ほとんど独学で作曲を学ぶ。50年（昭和25）ごろから十二音音楽に関心を抱き、51年日本初の十二音技法の作品『七つの楽器のための室内協奏曲』を発表。その後も音列技法を用いた作品を書き続けると同時に、その理論や作品の紹介にも努めた。晩年は日本や東洋の音楽に興味をもち、「世界音楽」とか「汎(はん)音楽」の思想による作品を発表した。著書に『十二音の音楽』（1953）、主要作品に『ヴァイオリンとピアノのための二重協奏曲』（1955）、『綾(あや)の鼓(つづみ)』（1962）、オーケストラのための『ヴァンドルンゲン』（1973）、『評弾』（1977）ほかがある。
