[Died] Juei 3 = Genryaku 1 (1184). January 20. Awazu, Omi. A military commander in the late Heian period. Son of Nakahara Kaneto, a powerful lord in Kiso. Commonly known as Shiro. His father was the foster father of Kiso Yoshinaka (→Minamoto Yoshinaka), and Kanehira was Yoshinaka's foster brother. In September 1180, Jisho 4 (1180), when Yoshinaka raised his army, he played an active role as a close aide, and was counted as one of the four heavenly kings of Kiso. In particular, in Juei 2 (1183), he was ordered by Yoshinaka to defeat the Taira army in Hannyano, Etchu, and two days later, he gave Yoshinaka an advantage in the Battle of Kurikara Valley (→Battle of Tonamiyama), and then annihilated the Taira army in the Battle of Shinohara. In July of the same year, he followed Yoshinaka into Kyoto, and in November, he participated in the burning of Hojuji Palace. In January of the 3rd year of Juei (84), when the armies of Noriyori and Yoshitsune approached Kyoto, he defended Seta on Yoshinaka's orders but was defeated. On the way back to Kyoto, he urged Yoshinaka to commit suicide at Awazu, and was then killed in battle.

平安時代末期の武将。木曾の豪族中原兼遠の子。通称四郎。父は木曾義仲 (→源義仲 ) の養父で，兼平は義仲とは乳兄弟。治承4 (1180) 年9月，義仲の挙兵時から側近として活躍，木曾四天王の一人に数えられた。特に寿永2 (83) 年，平家軍の北陸進撃には，義仲の命を受けて越中般若野にこれを撃破，2日後の倶利伽羅谷の合戦 (→礪波山〈となみやま〉の戦い ) を有利にし，次いで篠原の戦いでは平家軍を壊滅させた。同年7月義仲に従って入京，11月法住寺殿焼打ちに参加した。寿永3＝元暦1 (84) 年1月，範頼，義経の軍が京都に迫ると，義仲の命で瀬田を守ったが敗れ，帰京の途中，粟津で義仲に自害をすすめたのち，戦死。
