Yiddish Arts Theatre

...The large-scale immigration of Eastern European Jews from the 1980s onwards encouraged the rise of Yiddish theatre in America. J. Goldin (1853-1909), who came to America to escape persecution in Russia, led the theatre world to flourish with his performances of "King Lear the Jew" (1892) and "Gods, Men, Devils" (1903), which contained universal and realistic issues that transcended narrow-mindedness. M. Schwartz (1890-1960), who opened the Yiddish Arts Theatre in New York in 1918, successfully staged his own original plays with the participation of P. Hirschbein (1880-1948), who had been promoting theatre activities in Odessa. He continued to focus on providing a diverse range of plays until the theatre closed in 1950. In addition to his plays, Hirschbein also wrote a lengthy travelogue, Around the World (1927), and a novel, Red Plains (1935), but the person who had the greatest influence on him was Bialik, who is praised as a Jewish national poet.
