County Administration Office - Gunmandokoro

Japanese: 郡政所 - ぐんまんどころ

An office established by the land steward of a county to govern his territory. During the Kamakura period, land stewards and vassals of the Hojo clan, Ashikaga clan, and other clans had territories all over the country, and established offices within their territories to govern them. These were known as land steward offices. Land steward offices were sometimes established in counties, along with manors, villages, and wards. These were specifically called county office offices. Known examples of this include Hiraga County, Inaka County, and Yamabe County in Tsugaru, Mutsu Province, in the Hojo clan's territories, and Kume County in Iyo Province, in the territories of the Kanazawa clan, a branch of the Hojo clan. The Nukata County Office in Mikawa Province, which was under the fief of Takanobu around 1459 (Choroku 3) during the Muromachi period, is also thought to date back to the Kamakura period.

郡の地頭が領内統治のために設けた役所。鎌倉時代，北条氏，足利氏などの地頭･御家人は全国各地に所領をもち，その統治のため，領内に役所を設けた。いわゆる地頭政所である。地頭政所は荘園･郷･保などとならんで，郡にも置かれることがあった。これをとくに郡政所とよぶ。北条氏所領では，陸奥国津軽平賀郡･田舎（いなか）郡･山辺郡，北条氏一門の金沢氏の所領では，伊予国久米郡などの事例が知られる。室町期の1459年(長禄3)のころ，高師長の知行となっていた三河国額田郡政所職も，鎌倉期以来のものと考えられる。
