The hypothesis that one enzyme is under the control of one gene. In 1945, American scientists Beadle and Tatum inferred this when studying a mutant strain of Neurospora crassa, which lacked the enzymes that catalyze each reaction in the arginine synthesis pathway. In response to this, some people praise the one-gene-one-peptide-chain hypothesis, arguing that genes do not necessarily synthesize enzymes.
