…After 750 BC, Greek colonies were established in various places along the Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts outside of mainland Greece, and the number of participants from those cities increased. Several months before the festival, messengers from the region of Elis, where Olympia is located, traveled on horseback throughout Greece to announce the Olympic truce (echeiria). This was to ensure the success of the Olympic Games and the safety of the travels of worshippers from all over the country. Although Greece was not necessarily at complete peace during this period, the festival was not canceled even during the 27-year Peloponnesian War. …
