...An osteomalacia-like disease that is said to have been afflicted mainly by postmenopausal women who had given birth in the rural areas of the Jinzu River basin in Toyama Prefecture in the years following World War II. The name of the disease came to be used as a common name because of the severe pain it causes throughout the body. In 1955, Minoru Kono and others first reported the disease to the academic community, and in 1968, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced a view that recognized the disease as a pollution-related disease caused by cadmium Cd discharged from the Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd., upstream of the Jinzu River.
[Symptoms]
Symptoms begin with lower back pain and muscle pain in the lower limbs, followed by limited hip joint movement and duck-like gait.

…富山県神通川流域の農村地区で，第2次世界大戦後の数年間を中心に，主として更年期以降の経産婦がかかったといわれる骨軟化症様の病気。全身の激痛を訴えることから，この病名が通称として用いられるようになった。1955年に河野稔らがこの病気を初めて学会に報告し，68年にはこの病気を神通川上流の三井金属鉱業神岡鉱業所より排出されたカドミウムCdに起因する公害病と認めた厚生省見解が発表された。
