...An osteomalacia-like disease that is said to have been afflicted mainly by postmenopausal women who had given birth in the rural areas of the Jinzu River basin in Toyama Prefecture in the years following World War II. The name of the disease came to be used as a common name because of the severe pain it causes throughout the body. In 1955, Minoru Kono and others first reported the disease to the academic community, and in 1968, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced a view that recognized the disease as a pollution-related disease caused by cadmium Cd discharged from the Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd., upstream of the Jinzu River. *Some of the terminology used in relation to "Itai-itai Disease Compensation" is listed below.
