This refers to the removal of harmful algae such as sugamo, sargassum, and calcareous algae, as well as epiphytic animals such as barnacles and sponges, which hinder the growth of useful algae such as kelp, wakame, and agaric, which grow on coastal rocks, in order to allow them to flourish. Rock cleaning has two purposes: to promote the growth of useful algae, and to create new rock surfaces that are easier for the spores of useful algae to attach to. In shallow waters, isogane (an iron spatula used to remove abalone), sickles, and wire brushes are used. In deeper waters, isogane and sickles are used by diving, or large sickles are used from a boat, or a chain cleaner is pulled around on the boat to remove algae.
