…Sexual reproduction is by eggs and sperm, and asexual reproduction by zoospores. The order Oedogoniales was established because of the characteristics that both swimming sperm and zoospores have numerous flagella arranged in a crown-like shape at the tip, and because they undergo a unique pattern of somatic cell division not seen in other green algae. This order includes the family Oedogoniaceae, which includes the genus Oedogonia, which has unbranched filaments, as well as two genera: Bulbochaete , which has stinging hairs on the apical cells of the branching filaments, and Oedocladium , which has no stinging hairs on the apical cells. In Japan, about 10 species of Bulbochaete are known, but only one species of Oedocladium is known. …
