...Most of the stories are told by the shite, and may involve personal experiences such as love stories or war stories, or hearsay such as the origins of temples and shrines or historical events. Most of these chants are sung by the jiutai, and the shite may sit still in the center of the stage (called "i-guse") or stand and dance (called "mai-guse"). Mai-guse has a set pattern of movements, and the dances in each piece can be considered to be variations of that pattern....
